Summer Guitar Summit with Tom Dempsey and Dave Allen


Summer Guitar Summit with Tom Dempsey and Dave Allen is open to intermediate-advanced level guitarists who are looking to improve their skills related to playing jazz guitar. This is a weekly workshop that will meet for two hours in each session.

Tuition: SUMMER SALE: $349 (16 course hours!). Regular Price: $425
Dates: May 4, 2010 - July 6, 2010 (8 weeks). No class May 18 & June 1. (Note that Tuesday, July 6, falls just after the holiday weekend. If you register for the class, but you miss the last session, due to an extended holiday weekend, you will receive a free pass to a future NYJA workshop session.)
Time: Tuesdays, 7pm-9pm. Walk-ins are welcome ($60 cash).

Dave Allen

Prerequisites for the workshop include:

  • A desire to improve your jazz guitar performance
  • Ability to play barre chords
  • Knowledge of the minor pentatonic scale
  • Knowledge of major scale
  • Ability to read either musical notation and/or tablature
  • Ability to read chord box/fretboard diagrams for chords and scales

There will be weekly practice and listening assignments. This is a great way to learn the skills necessary to play jazz guitar effectively while getting a chance to play with other musicians.



About the instructors

Tom Dempsey is a New York based jazz guitarist who has performed with such jazz luminaries as Roy Haynes, Dave Brubeck, Jack McDuff, Bobby McFerrin and Jim Hall. He is the author of five books published by Alfred Music that range from sight reading to jazz guitar skills. As an instructor Dempsey has taught at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The National Guitar Workshop, Rutgers University, SUNY New Paltz and the New York Jazz Academy. He has over 20 years of group instruction experience and has a detailed and organized curriculum for this workshop. For more about Tom Dempsey, click here.

Guitarist and composer Dave Allen is a distinctive voice on his instrument and is widely respected in the jazz community as both a player and a composer. At the age of 16, Allen was recognized by Guitar Player Magazine as a talent to watch. Born in Philadelphia, Allen moved to New York in 1988 to attend the Manhattan School of Music. Leading his own groups for the past 18 years, Allen has made his presence felt on the New York scene. He has released two critically acclaimed recordings, "Untold Stories" and "Real and Imagined" on the Fresh Sound label, which feature original music and a well-crafted group sound. Jazz critics have noted his effortless technique combined with his lyrical sound and melodic sensitivity. His groups often include some of the most sought after players working in jazz today, such as Mark Turner, Seamus Blake, Ravi Coltrane, David Liebman, Jeff Ballard, Donny McCaslin, Drew Gress, and many others.
