Hi Jazz Enthusiasts! The New York Jazz Academy trip to Cuba is only a few weeks away, and we have launched a fundraising campaign. If you’d like to give to NYJA to support our mission, contributing to this latest venture would be a great way to show support.
Perhaps you’ve benefited from our instruction, our performances, our community outreach, mentoring, tuition-free online classes, free jam sessions, public concerts, and more. Or maybe you are just supportive of our continued mission as NYC’s most active all-jazz school, with students ranging from age 1-88. In any case, we hope you’ll check out our fundraising campaign and consider contributing to our cause. If you would like to help New York Jazz Academy in your office, school, or other social setting, please consider printing and posting our campaign flyer:
Please help New York Jazz Academy send faculty members to Cuba alongside students for an amazing week of cultural exchange, from December 14-21, 2014.
On this trip, officially sanctioned by the US Dept of Treasury, NYJA’s primary goal will be to bring an authentic NYC-style jazz education to young Havana musicians through workshops and jam sessions presented alongside the legendary Alberto Faya.
NYJA hopes that this trip, especially as it involves the 2014 Havana Jazz Festival and its many surrounding activities, will lead to more Cuban/American educational collaborations. But none of this will be possible without your support!
NYJA’s mission is, and had always been, about spreading the joy of the artistic endeavor through music instruction centered on jazz improvisation. Over the past six years, NYJA has become a family of professional, amateur and up-and-coming musicians, of all ages, united by a love of jazz.
Being that one of the essential components in the genesis of jazz in the late-19th and early-20th centuries was Afro-Cuban music, and that jazz, in turn, has had a tremendous influence upon Latin American music as a whole, this trip promises to be full of opportunities for discovery in all aspects.
Aside from being a long-awaited opportunity for these students and teachers, it is also a rare chance to further an artistic dialogue – one that has unfortunately been largely prevented because of the decades-long embargo.
While we have gathered some travel funds already, your donations will directly fund travel expenses for faculty members to and from NYC and Miami, in addition to helping with lodging in Havana.
Thank you in advance for helping make our mission a reality.
